A wallet pass open is not loyalty

Smartphone screen with notification-style graphics

Wallet passes are a gift to operations. A balance update can reach the lock screen without opening your app. Marketers then do what marketers do: they put a number on “opens” and call it love. It is not love. It is a glance, often accidental, sometimes caused by the pass updating itself after a petrol fill you were going to do anyway.

In Wallet Pass Analytics for Thai Retail we treat the pass as a channel with three honest events: installed, updated, and used at till. “Opened” is allowed on the dashboard only if you can say whether the guest walked into a store in the following six hours. Otherwise it is wallpaper.

Updates collide with push

A petrol programme in our 2025 Signal Desk intake learned that wallet update pings and promotional pushes were landing in the same forty minutes after school pickup. Guests were not “fatigued by copy.” They were fatigued by two systems clearing their throat at once. Splitting the calendar — dawn for balance, after 20:30 for promotion — flattened unsubscribes without touching earn.

If your pass provider only gives you a coarse open count, say so in the report. Inventing a funnel from a coarse count is how loyalty teams lose finance later, when the till data refuses to agree.

What attachment still looks like

Repeat visits on non-discounted days. Intended burns. A pass that is still installed after a quiet month. Those are slower numbers. They survive a sceptical Monday. The glance metric can stay in an appendix, where it belongs.

The companion kit is listed on the catalogue. The collision problem is also walked in Quiet hours, school pickup, and push fatigue.
